Gretchen was a little happier knowing that she might have employment with Uncle David, looking after his two boys. She struggled to remember David from the last time sheâd seen him. Heâd seemed kind, from what little she could recall, but she had no memory of what he'd looked like.
Ruth was busy in the kitchen, while Mrs. Fisher was having an afternoon nap.
âCan I help you, Ruth? Please say âyes,â as Iâve little else to do.â
âIâll be glad of the help. Iâm getting things prepared for the caroling. Thereâs a lot to coordinate.â
Ruth gave Gretchen the vegetables to peel. âAdam said that David, your uncle is back tomorrow.â
âYes, he is due then. Adamâs going to talk with him and if all goes well, Iâll have some employment, and have a place to live,â Gretchen said.
âYou look a lot happier.â
Gretchen did feel more relaxed now that she wasnât nervous about being found out. âWhat do you know about David?â
âHeâs a man Iâve liked for a long time. No one knows. Anyway, the boys are good ages, four and five. They are so innocent and sweet at that age. It will be restful only to have two to watch. It shouldnât be that hard.â
âI wouldnât think so, and Iâd enjoy it.â Gretchen turned away from her vegetables, and looked at Ruth. The pain on her face was clearly evident. âItâll happen when itâs meant to,â Gretchen said.
Ruth knew exactly what she meant. âMaybe, and maybe it wonât happen at all.â
Not knowing what to say to comfort this woman whoâd quickly become her friend, Gretchen remained silent.
âI shouldnât have burdened you with my silly problems,â Ruth said. âIf I had known he was your uncle, I wouldnât have mentioned him at all.â
âYouâve been good to me, Ruth. Better than anyone else in my life. Iâd like to be able to say or do something to make you feel better.â
âItâs in Godâs hands. I think Iâm too old to ever be a mother, but at the very least Iâd like the chance to be someoneâs wife.â
Gretchen bit the inside of her mouth, and turned back to the vegetables.
The midday meal was just for the three of themâRuth, Gretchen and Mrs. Fisher. It was a simple dinner of beef stew and rice with vegetables on the side.
Adam came back later that afternoon and told Gretchen that heâd drive her to see her uncle tomorrow. Gretchen was pleased and agreed.
After that, he went home and didnât even stay for a meal.
That evening, Gretchen excused herself for an early night. She walked into her bedroom, wishing that she hadnât disappointed such a good man as Adam. He deserved the very best of everything, especially after heâd lost his dear and beloved wife.
Gretchen sighed heavily, and lowered herself onto the bed.
Maybe things had worked out how they were supposed to. Sheâd made friends in the family. And now that she had a good friend in Ruth, it would be so much easier to adjust in this new community. Right now, her staying all depended on her uncle.
